The two both headlined and drew quite the audience to the small venue. Hearing Allred was a first for me and I was quite impressed.

Lead singer John Allred has quite a unique voice and likes to experiment with different instrumental sounds mix up some of his acoustic songs. While some of his songs were a little on the depressing side overall I would give him and his band a very good review and recommend them. Benton Paul gave a stellar performance as usual and brought in some new songs as well as some old favorites. It was no surprise to hear the voices of many screaming girls as he took the stage. Benton has really improved as a performer over the past few years and really knows how to keep his audience energetic. I had the chance to watch the show with his beaming parents and listen to how proud they were of their son. An eruption of applause came from Jan Paul as her son took the stage; she made sure to pull out her flip camera to record his new song to show him the footage later so he can critique himself. When recording in a studio Benton often records all the parts to the song himself, vocals, guitar, keyboard, maybe bringing in someone to play the drum set. But because he can’t do this during a live show he brought along his good friends Bart and John to play the drums and keyboard. After a wild concert, Benton decided to spread the joy a little further; so he and his band gave a benefit concert for Haiti on Saturday in Ogden.

If you are unfamiliar with Allred or Benton Paul, look them up! It is totally worth a listen.

http://www.bentonpaul.com/

http://www.allredmusic.com/

<category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='Henry B. Sometimes I feel that I’ve been doomed to a horribly ambiguous future. I was in one of those moods this past week. Amidst my brooding, I noticed a quote by Henry B. Eyring, which said: “We cannot see the future with precision, but we can know what the Lord intends and what it will take [for] each of us to qualify personally to participate.” How freaking awesome is that? I mean, it’s nothing new or revelatory, but it was a comforting reminder to know that the Lord is in control. Our purpose here is to preparing to return to His presence, and everything else is secondary. The method of success has been clearly laid before us; Jesus Christ and His Gospel are the way. By strengthening our faith in Him, reconciling our thoughts, desires, and actions to that faith, and making sacred covenants, we prepare ourselves for that return home. Mercifully, we’ve been given the Spirit as a constant check, as a way to know that we’re on the right path, or how to get there if we’re not. So, yes, classes are still stressing me out, I don’t know if I’ll ever get married, and don’t even talk to me about life after graduation. But I do know what the Lord expects me to do, and I know that everything else will fall into place.

Forgotten: by Launa Marie Lewis

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 172px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_uoyU3Br23OY/TVHW4UKRKnI/AAAAAAAAA9k/H8WsShtfqyk/s400/Forgotten.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5571470477006809714" />Every little girl grows up wishing to be a princess. I guess I should have been a little more specific when blowing out the candles.

It happened on a Sunday morning like any other. I had just finished getting ready to go, so I made my way downstairs. And that’s when I found no one. I was all alone.

In the house. By myself. On a Sunday Morning. I hadn’t pretended to be sick. I hadn’t locked myself in my closet. It wasn’t as if they could have just forgotten me. And the only explanation that I could come up with to explain why my parents had so hatefully abandoned me was because they wanted me to be like Cinderella. They wanted me to be their servant. So I did what any self-respecting slave child would do. I cried and muttered to myself about how I’d always known this day would come and how my parents hated me.

And that’s when my mom came hurrying in through the garage door. She asked me if I was coming or not. My poor mother did not realize that I was no longer sad. By that point I furious. So I chucked the broom across the kitchen floor, began stamping my feet vigorously and yelled at my mother.

That was the last time my parents forgot me.

Witness: by Emily Young

As an English major and an interested person, I often find myself listening to the English Reading Series. This past week was Brian Doyle, a writer from Portland. Brian is a devout Catholic, which inflected many of his readings and views. I’d like to
share one of those views that I found interesting.

It is the concept of witnessing. As he thanked us for our time, he spoke of “witnessing [as] the great endeavor. The greatest gift you can give someone…it helps us see each other clearly.” Witnessing someone, laughing with them, crying with them, being with them gets us out of ourselves. It makes us less selfish, broadens our worldview (an action inherent in being less selfish) and encourages charity (obviously).

How do you witness? Be with people. Listen to their stories. Laugh it up. Cry. Not all tears are an evil. Its “good, holy. It cracks open windows and doors. Not to let anything out, but to let grace in.” Let in the grace of other people’s humanity. Be quiet, leave a silence that someone else can fill. Share the experience of life with them, if only for a little while. Share the prayer that is each person.

We always talk about being a witness of Jesus Christ. Let us also be witnesses of each other in our path towards Christ.

Christmas Cheer Comes Early to Provo: by Christian Hong

Aspen Grove—Braving frigid temperatures and a half hour trip was no problem for the members of the sixth ward, who kicked off the holiday festivities with the annual Christmas celebration in Aspen Grove Lodge up Provo Canyon.

Whether you came with “a date”, (or just came by yourself), it was a fun filled night
for everyone, with a delicious ham dinner, good company amongst friends, and some
excellent entertainment. Included were many memorable musical performances by
members of the ward, the traditional telling of the Christmas story, and even a visit from a plucky pair of Santa’s helpers who taught us how to start the morning right when you are on the front lines as Santa’s elite.

The night concluded with some words of wisdom from Bishop Patten, who reminded us about how the things that matter most might are right in front of us. Although distractions
may derail our focus and the hectic hullabaloo of the holiday season might make us miss the true meaning, our central focus should be on the Savior.
Whether your favorite memory of the night was the food, the entertainment or just the
company, this was definitely a ward Christmas celebration to be cherished.

Manrichment 2.0: A Manly Mancation: by Jordan Moody

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_uoyU3Br23OY/TLueGXOe_wI/AAAAAAAAA6U/IP_-O2gzvfc/s320/40752_485570040843_508775843_6976119_1557518_n.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5529186799678586626" />This weekend, for those of us who took the adventure, we set out with one intent:to be men. We knew that the best way to accomplish this was through the Elder’s Quorum Fall Manrichment Camping Trip. To run a campout like a man, the first things you need to do is (1) not have any idea where you are going to camp, (2) get lost and not ask directions, (3) somehow have everyone end up at the same site, and (4) start burning stuff.Needless to say, we started out by doing just that.

Four men will receive special recognition for not using a tent: Todd, Weston, Nathan C., and, of course, myself. Mike LaNeave won man points by starting the trend of flipping a foil dinner with his bare hands; this same Mike also got all of the man-food for the Mancation. The night was spent in warm camaraderie (because of the fire, of course . . . it was big) and everyone finally getting a chance to really get to know the other men in the quorum.

Never did we anticipate what it would be like to take along an individual that set out to be a man, none other than Chris Diep . I don’t think that any of us has ever met a man more skilled in the arts of changing the subject completely and saying the most random things that usually resulted in everyone exchanging confused glances. I believe that he was the most quoted man on the trip, and for good reasons.

The hike was a manly one. A lot of the men were murmuring against me at a 5 mile round trip point, so we started back for the football game. On the way up and back from hiking, we remembered to take some manly pictures. These are all of Facebook now, on Nathan Hong’s profile page. Some even include a tarantula that Weston wanted to take home. Weol said no . . . also for good reasons.

As an Elder’s Quorum Presidency, we would like to thank every man who contributed to a very successful Fall Mancation. I think I speak for every man who joined us when I say that we all came back a little more man. For good reasons.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_uoyU3Br23OY/TLueXihF4hI/AAAAAAAAA6c/QavZ_1JAmps/s400/71495_485570340843_508775843_6976129_7717200_n.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5529187094767198738" />

Koncert with Kirby: by Katelynn Sumko

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_uoyU3Br23OY/TLudShrxRoI/AAAAAAAAA6E/-K7ZwK9jFHE/s400/kirbyheybourne+015.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5529185909132576386" />CP Lounge- Thanks to Sam King, this last Thursday, Campus Plaza got a private concert in the lounge starring Kirby Heyborne. For those of you who don’t recognize the name, Kirby is an LDS actor starring it many of your favorite movies: The RM, The Best Two Years, and of course the one we are all personally living in, The Singles Ward! He is hilarious on your TV screen, but did you know he sings? He not only sings, but he writes his own music and currently has four solo albums on the market. That’s no small feat! This guy is famous!! Surprisingly, Kirby’s first love is music. Not acting. Before we knew him as Dalen Martin from The Singles Ward, he was already writing and performing his music.

I was personally a little skeptical as I made my way down to the lounge Thursday night—how could I sit and listen to someone sing a melancholy song when all I could hear in my head was him saying, “geode dag mufraur” with giant glasses on in a nerdy voice. He was still hilarious, but balanced his humor and his musical talent like a professional. Kirby was great at involving his audience in the show! On his way into the lounge, he ran into some guys and the next thing you know, they brought their drums and participated in the show. He teased couples about being a “Campus Plaza” romance and joked on a personal level with everyone.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_uoyU3Br23OY/TLudf0lCcDI/AAAAAAAAA6M/esEJFPKF3RQ/s320/kirbyheybourne+048.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5529186137542914098" />Sam King, the man who made it all possible originally saw Kirby play in his home town and told him that one day, after his mission, he would have the chance to jam on stage with him. So when Kirby publicized his new concert series in which he wanted the chance to perform in his fan’s front rooms, Sam wrote in to persuade him to come to good ‘ole CP. Sam got his wish, he played up on stage with Kirby and let the world known that they are “closer than brothers” as they played a song titled “Home” for all of us in the audience to enjoy. “It was a blast to play with Kibry, he’s such a funny guy, fun to be around, and also made it very comfortable for me to play with him. He’s very down to earth and we instantly connected again after meeting for the second time. I couldn’t believe he actually remembered the day that we met in Missouri so long ago. He felt more like a friend to me than a celebrity; he was more concerned about me and my career than he was about his own fame and success.” Sam also played one of his originals called, “Apple Pie Baby”—so ladies, if you’d like to impress him, or thank him for bringing Kirby Heyborne to perform for us here in CP, bring on the apple pie!!!

Why I Don’t Date : by Marie Lewis and Jordan Moody

A landmark parody written to the tune of Alison Krauss’s:
Stress and tests. I’m an English major, so I don’t take very many tests in the Testing Center. This past Thursday I took two.

Although I don’t often take tests there, I have some rituals that I go though before going upstairs. Must pee. No matter what the test. Check and double check materials: ID, pencils/pens, bluebooks, etc. It’s a little OCD. But it’s as if being materially over-prepared will compensate for being mentally under-prepared.

It seems that in the Testing Center, with all those stress hormones in the air, I get more easily annoyed. You know—the neighbor who REFUSES to blow their nose, just keeps sniffling.

Or the squeaky pencil of the girl in front of you. Or that guy who brought in freshly-popped popcorn normally care that much, but in that big room of doom, I hate those people with every bit of my soul that isn’t taken up by anxiety. The Testing Center is an odd place.

People studying in every nook and cranny. Gigantic room full of hunched-over scribblers. The baby-bird necks of test-score anticipation. The punch dance of excitement or the broken neck of disappointment. It’s all part of being a student. And it is dang strange.

A Little About Me: by Casey Greer

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_uoyU3Br23OY/TLuYagjXL8I/AAAAAAAAA50/4_wtYg_-GRU/s400/48050_468275200714_601095714_7093388_7951306_n.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5529180548709691330" />N205- Hello everyone. My name is Casey Greer and I'm new to the ward. Because I'm new, I'd like to let everyone have the chance to get to know me, so I will be highlighting myself: I'm a student at BYU, and am originally from northern California, so obviously I'm a HUGE Giants fan. I'm extremely happy they're doing good in the playoffs so far. I am an econ major, and I graduate 2012. It's a LONG ways away huh? It's ok, I'll be brave and still try and make it. I have an awesome girlfriend in the ward who is definitely easing the pain of schooling. We've been dating for a couple months now, and she's just great. Oh and by the way, I also LOVE sweets. Any dessert is my best friend. Especially if it's ice cream . . . I'm sorry, what was that? What did you say? Pardon me? You think it's rude to just go on about myself and not ask about your life or how you're doing?! Yeah.... me too. In fact, earlier this week I had an experience that helped me realize this. I was talking to a friend of mine and was so excited to tell her about some new developments in my life and that I went on and on about myself without asking her about her life or how she was doing. When I finally got around to doing so, I found out she was going through some really big trials in her life and needed a friend to just listen and be there for her. I felt awful and have committed myself to start thinking about others well being more than my own. Let us all start caring more about others.

Oh and by the way, I highlighted Todd Hall in N205. Get to know him, he's a great guy :).

<category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='C. Any Latter Day Saint who hasn’t read it should definitely look into reading it at some point in their life. Mere Christianity is a “defense of Christianity” written by the author of the Chronicles of Narnia, C. S. Lewis.

One question that many have wondered, including myself, is: If God truly is so forgiving, why won’t most everyone (eventually) reach the Celestial Kingdom?
Lewis has an excellent answer to this question: “God will not refuse you admission to His eternal world if you have not got certain qualities of character: the point is that if people have not got at least the beginnings of those qualities inside them, then no possible external conditions could make a ‘Heaven’ for them--that is, could make them happy with the deep, strong, unshakable kind of happiness God intends for us.”

It is up to us to take advantage of the atonement. If we do so, we will at least have the beginning of the qualities we need to become perfect creatures in the eyes of god.

Lewis also has excellent teachings on Pride. He sums it up quite clearly:
“Pride is spiritual cancer…The real black, diabolical Pride, comes when you look down on others so much that you do not care what they think of you.”
I can’t think of a more clear definition of Pride than “spiritual cancer.” It is real easy to justify looking down on others because you, consciously or unconsciously, view yourselves as better than them. It is important to not care what others think for the right reasons.

The last quote, my favorite, doesn’t really need an explanation: “Do not imagine that if you meet a really humble man he will be what most people call ‘humble’ nowadays: he will not be a sort of greasy, smarmy person, who is always telling you that, of course, he is nobody. Probably all you will think about him is that he seemed a cheerful, intelligent chap who took a real interest in what you said to him. If you dislike him it will be because you feel a little envious of anyone who seems to enjoy life so easily. He will not be thinking about humility: he will not be thinking about himself at all.”

<category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='Elder Neal A. Just as agency is essential to perfectibility, so meekness is essential to agency. The Father and our Savior desire to lead us through love, for if we were merely driven where They wish us to go, we would not be worthy to be there, and, surely, we could not stay there. They are Shepherds, not sheepherders.”

-Elder Neal A. After stating his disappointment that I wasn’t a writer from “a bigger newspaper, like the daily universe”, I discovered he was from a small, small town known as Winnemucca, Nevada. I quickly got the feeling he was very proud of this fact when I asked him the next question, “Ryan, what makes you unique?” And he answered, “I’m from Winnemucca Nevada, how many people can say that?” Apparently not many people can say that because there were only about 700 people total in his high school. He is the youngest in a family of 4 boys and 2 girls; he also has 6 nieces and 1 nephew. Ryan prefers outdoors, summer, hot weather, vanilla and pancakes with homemade maple syrup or raspberry syrup on them. His favorite food is a Hamburger with everything on it, except tomatoes. He is a business major and his dream car is a black Yukon with leather interior. Want to know more? Here are some more questions and answers from our interview:

Q. What are your pet peeves?
A. Mackay (his roommate), popped collars, Fohawks, and when people walk slow and crowd up sidewalks when you’re in a hurry.
Q. What are you mostafraid of?
A. Being attacked by a shark in open water
Q. If you had 3 days left to live what would you do?
A. Each week we have an assignment to, in effect, get us out of our rut. This week, our assignment was to go to a restaurant and eat something we’ve never eaten before. I texted my roommate, Cate, and asked her if she would accompany me on a woman date to go to a restaurant I've never been and eat something I've never eaten. She replied: Dear Marie, Have u ever had sushi (This made me very nervous, because sushi makes me afraid) . . . Or Chinese hot pot? I hadn't eaten either before, so I agreed.

This afternoon, we hopped into her green jeep, turned on some decidedly American music, and drove to a Chinese restaurant. The Four Seasons to be exact. We entered a room, all decked out in Chinese paraphernalia. with many tables bearing hot pots. A Chinese man came to greet us. He invited us to sit at a table for two on the opposite wall from his only other patron. He asked us what kind of soup we wanted: a little spicy, medium spicy, spicy, or very spicy. Cate loves spicy food. I am less of a fan.

Cause it always makes your nose run.

So we got the little spicy variety. Because Chinese hot pot comes with dipping sauces . . . which are really spicy . . . and make you cry.

If you're a baby. Like me.

After he brought around the soup, we went to the ingredients bar and chose several things: pork, chicken, potatoes, zucchini (my mother will be proud), broccoli, potato noodles, rice noodles, tofu squares, and then two little mussels (one for me and one for Cate).

We brought all of our ingredients back to the table and slid them carefully into the pot of now boiling soup so as to not splash scalding juices onto our faces (which because I'm clumsy, I did anyway). Then we waited. After about five minutes the food was done cooking

and we were ready to eat. The moment of truth was here. The mussel was already on my plate. Looking all menacingly and gross. Like a bottom feeder. I imagined that all sorts of nasty things had been through its organs. And I was going to put that in my mouth!! Cate, nervously poked at hers, then looked at me and said, "I don't think I can eat that."

That was the worst part.

Imagining it.

Turns out, mussels aren't so gross. They aren't delicious. I don't want to line my refrigerator with them. I won't be starting a mussel farm anytime soon. But they aren't gross. I know. I ate the whole thing. Cate was impressed. I am Super Woman.
So if you’re ever looking for a really different culinary experience, head on down to The Four Seasons. The food is good, the environment is fabulous, and its an experience you won’t forget.

Shiver Me Timbers! Ye be runnin’ a queer ship here. The long honored codes of treasure keepin’ have walked the plank. Arrr! Don’t catch me drift, matey?

What I be meaning is the way crew be running in and out of the cabins, the meanest bilge rat crawling into any cabin (s)he pleases, without so much as a “Ahoy” or friendly knock of the boarding hook. And the crew takes whatever sugary treasure that just crawled out of the bunghole. Swillin’ grog all the while. And while this may be mighty useful in fightin’ of the accursed scurvy, it be mighty queer. Never in all me salty days have I seen anything of it’s like. It ignores the rights of the treasure keep—that what they’ve earned is theirs for the keeping, and must be duly warned if that treasure is disputed or sought. All getting’ their fair share. The crew can at the very least give a friendly wave of the colors or a knock of the cannons.

Now, me beauties, alls well and good in the pursuit of pretty lasses and strappin’ buccaneers, but keep to the code! I guess I’m not that creative, because I couldn’t think of anything. So I did what every person in a rut does, and I asked every person I could think of for good advice on something "not lame" to do. After mostly receiving advice like "make-out with a complete stranger", I decided to just not think about it for a while, Because, goodness knows, I am NOT about to make-out with any random engineering major I just happen to bump into during my occasional traverses of the Clyde—I've got class. I'm not a psycho.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_uoyU3Br23OY/TIQ2hwQl_sI/AAAAAAAAAxY/_2CalPSyP0k/s400/DSCN0850.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5513591797326413506" />And then, while jamming out to my iPOD, it came to me like a little lost puppy begging someone to take it in—I would play the most obese game of twister ever played INSIDE the TNRB. Because they hate fun. And if, so much as, one person leaving the Divine Comedy show decided that it would be worth it to join me, I would consider it the most successful game of twister ever organized in under four hours.

So I busied myself making preparations. I asked my roommate, who works in the TNRB, if something of such epic proportions was EVEN LEGAL. And then, I went to pick up the 60 lb. mat from Outdoors Unlimited—I'm not kidding, the mat weighs SIXTY POUNDS!! Then after spreading the word, and waiting around for hours, trying to do my homework (and being really very unsuccessful), it was time. I led 15 of my closest campus plazaites northward. About fifteen minutes later (ten for the really excited ones) we descended the 8 million stairs toward the ground floor of the TNRB where we would bring forth great awesomeness—and we did.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_uoyU3Br23OY/TIQ2xrT-1ZI/AAAAAAAAAxg/3_jxhVBHuFE/s400/DSCN5797a.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5513592070876353938" />We started out using half the mat, but when Divine Comedy let out, we opened up the whole mat. As the game progressed, we folded in the mat to make it more difficult. Twenty-seven folds and three callers later, we had it down to two final contestants using only sixteen circles. And it was only a matter of time before we had a clear winner.

Things I learned about myself:

1) When I get really excited I step in place many times in quick succession--this is called excited feet.
2) I am more afraid of macking a complete stranger than the BYU Police.
3) I think 20 bucks is worth a good time.
4) I am a rock star, just like Jason Bagley. This place kinda of has a mentality of summer camp. Something is always going on. People running around barefoot, eating Otter Pops, coloring with chalk, playing a game of volleyball. CP brings out the kid in you.

Ward Activities from the months of March-October will always happen in the Bishop's backyard.

Go to the Gathering. K, I was the only one staying in my apartment this term, so I got to observe many different approaches to moving. Later on, as I was pondering all the times I’ve moved, or when roommates have moved, I realized that the way you move says something about the way you love. Sounds crazy but read me out.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 137px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_uoyU3Br23OY/TIQzt8ynJYI/AAAAAAAAAww/E9dGkeKMGSc/s200/1704102893_159d482e2f.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5513588708313867650" />The Re-Packer
This person will have a box. They will pack it, realize not everything will fit or something, then unpack that box and repack it with the same stuff. Rinse and repeat. This person tends to be fun and spontaneous, but indecisive. They should come with the warning: Tends to Waffle.

The Non-Packer
Just what it sounds like—no packing is involved. They pile things into their hamper, move it to the new (usually next door) apartment and dump. Repeat. This person is a social butterfly—not willing to completely leave their comfort zones but still craves change. Can be very caring and genuine—once you can get their attention.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_uoyU3Br23OY/TIQ0Syx_SbI/AAAAAAAAAxA/7G8CvUsxUUI/s200/bread+dough+rising.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5513589341282060722" />The 3 Cars and Moving Team
This person has a lot. of stuff. Really. They are what I call a dough-person: if you give them space, they will fill it. These people tend to be generous, almost to a fault. They can be overwhelming or officious, but it is all very well meant. Bless their dedicated hearts.

The Minimalist
This person can efficiently move them selves, and they are proud of that fact. These people tend to be highly opinionated and are initially off-putting, but have a heart of gold. I call them oyster-people: always well worth the effort of cracking open.

There you go- now you have a new topic for first dates. Guaranteed to break the ice, I promise.

DAYcation: by Launa Marie Lewis

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_uoyU3Br23OY/TIQy5qjsXqI/AAAAAAAAAwo/wOlTbk4CGyg/s320/40691_10150234602565790_859485789_14187400_574550_n.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5513587810066259618" />Mona Lake—For those of you who decided to take classes this summer: you made it! And now you get to relax for two whole weeks-unless, of course, you don’t really consider Education Week a break. If that’s the case, I guess you only really get one week to recover. So enjoy. You deserve it.

As for me, I work full time, Monday through Saturday. So I don’t really have much time to vacation. But eating is nice—so I deal. However, this past Saturday, my boss decided to change things up a little, which resulted in the most fabulous DAYcation known to man.

It all started with a list. You see, at the beginning of the summer, Katelyn Barfuss made a list. It is comprised of all the things that she would like to accomplish this summer. Item number 26 on that list reads as follows: swing off a rope into Mona Lake. Sooooo, in the spirit of making dreams come true, we set up a facebook event and got to work getting the word out.

Then on Saturday we met up with a dozen of our most favorite people and headed south.

Annnnd . . . we got lost.

But, with a quick phone call we were well on our way to picnicing on the lake shore and hurling ourselves through the air (via rope swing—how epic is that?!!) and into the cool lake water. We all had an excellent time and most of us escaped unscathed. I’d go so far as to say that it is a must do activity while you’re here in Utah.

If you’re thinking of planning your own Mona daytrip, Here are a few pointers:

1) Before you roll out, plan on asking someone who has been before for directions. It’ll save you a lot of time and frustration.
2) When swinging, let go of the rope at the peak of your arch, otherwise you are in for a not-so-nice run in with some very questionable rocks.

Keep Moving Forward: by Christian Hong

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_uoyU3Br23OY/TIQyTI9oOJI/AAAAAAAAAwg/bmBkULjhrhQ/s400/graduation_hat_toss.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5513587148213205138" />Change is imminent in life. Sometimes it can be expected and controlled. Two days ago I graduated with my bachelors degree. Yesterday my sister was married for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple. Other times, change can be unexpected such as the sudden passing of a loved one or a failed grade. No matter what change we face, we can experience growth through pressing forward.

In 2nd Nephi 31:20, it describes how we should “press forward with a steadfastness in Christ, having a perfect brightness of hope and a love of God and all men.” Through learning and growing with change and experience we are given the promise that we can obtain eternal life. The important part is that we keep moving forward hopeful, knowing that the Lord will guide us and can help us understand even through adversity. May hope always shine bright and guide our paths.

Interview- Chloe Moller: by Emily Young

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 299px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_uoyU3Br23OY/TFYGkpB1aLI/AAAAAAAAAls/AF3tZmOg-mM/s320/27442_1162567534_7096_n.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5500591221438245042" />S211- They call her Honest Chloe, Graceful Chloe, Considerate Chloe, among other things. A woman of many sobriquets, this redhead from Crappy Little Mountain Town, CO is currently a resident of S211. Here are the Chloe Basics: English major, tutor at BYU’s Writing Center, vegetarian, pants-hater, pony-lover.

Here are the Chloe Extras: Chloe often goes on late-night runs to IHOP, where she recently stated that her blueberry pancakes were “the best thing in her mouth since man.” She is also a champion devourer of Krispy Kreme doughnuts, sometimes to the point of being sick. Her favorite food, up until last night, is potatoes, in all their deliciously various forms. Also, she loves pizza. The Papa Johns Delivery Man, aka “Pizza Man,” knows her by name.

She hates shaving her legs so much that this past winter, she went 6 months without shaving them. Why? Because not only does it grate against her feminist leanings but it provides extra warmth, which makes her “feel like a happy little grizzly bear.”

Although she says she hates babies and children, she spent 4 months teaching English to those kind of small people in the Ukraine. According to a reputable source, when she doesn’t think she’s being watched “she’s the BEST entertainer of children.”

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_uoyU3Br23OY/TFYGwohq7bI/AAAAAAAAAl0/qwG0EcKB1WQ/s400/16865_1322827668416_1162567534_30990007_3665802_n.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5500591427461770674" />If you ever want to be in her good graces, bring her a Dr Pepper, which she loves so much that if there were no more Dr Pepper, she’d build another tower of Babel so she could go talk to God and convince Him to give it back. It’d “be like the Restoration but instead of the Gospel, with soda.” Also, she does not enjoy EFY music. It makes her feel like a “praying mantis when it hears a bat and it makes their nervous system freeze up! We teach from the scriptures and from the words of the living prophet, in order to help those around us find peace and understand their divinity as children of God. One lesson I’ve learned deals with strength from steady scripture study. As Nephi states in 1st Nephi 19:23 we can “liken all scriptures unto us, that [they] might be for our profit and learning.”
Over the years, I have noticed the difference it has made between simply reading about heroes like Nephi, Captain Moroni, and most importantly the Savior, and actually applying those characteristics they exemplify in our own lives. We receive strength as we take action through faith, as we learn and live lessons through likening scriptures. May we all learn to love and live what we know to be true.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_uoyU3Br23OY/TFYF8EqlbTI/AAAAAAAAAlk/drXifOBx3CY/s400/scriptures.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5500590524482284850" />

Never Alone: by Emily Hadlock

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_uoyU3Br23OY/TFYE3aYTzdI/AAAAAAAAAlc/rp_QAGPehKY/s200/ProvoRiver.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5500589344900238802" />Provo River- Saturday morning arrived covered with gigantic marshmallow clouds. In Provo Canyon, the moderate temperatures and gentle breeze felt fantastic after the week of summer heat. However, cradled in a plastic inner tube floating along the Provo River, ward members agree that sunshine would have been a preferable companion. The water was cold, “Okay, it felt like someone had put ice cubes in the water,” quipped Bryce Sheffield.
Floating the river is an individual experience as each person has his/her own inner tube, however, it is also a team building exercise. As a newbie, I was extremely grateful for Aubrey Hoffmeier and Bryce Sheffield’s help. Sarah Embley agrees, “It was definitely an adventure. Without Jordan I never would have made it.” “That’s what I live for, damsels in distress,” teased Jordan Moody. After hearing about the event, Marcelo Gomez commented, “I missed all the action; I wish I had gone.” The ward grew closer through this activity and learned the value of teamwork. For the thirteen of us that attended, it will be an experience we won’t soon forget.

Super Powers: by Paul Petty

<img style="display:block; I remember a time when Dream Works compared with Pixar was mediocre. These films lacked story, character development, and the charm of the former. For a time all was placed upon the weary shoulders of an ogre. However as Shrek became older and become more run of the mill, new champions have stepped up to bat for Dream Works. Amongst these are a panda warrior, a night fury dragon, and the latest of the group, a super villain named Gru.

Despicable Me is about Gru whose diabolical plan is to miniaturize the moon to secure himself as the greatest super villain. However after multiple failed attempts to steal a shrink ray, he temporarily “adopts” three cookie selling girls to aid his efforts. Over time Gru’s lonely childhood is revealed, and in turn he learns to love these girls, changing him for the better. Although its not Toy Story 3, Despicable me has heart and is definitely a film worth seeing.

Christmas in July: by Emily Hadlock

S210- Twas three weeks ‘til finals, and all through the plaza S210’s blasting carols. While investigating a local garage sale, the ladies of S210 acquired a ceramic Santa. From that destined Santa, the idea for a Christmas in July party was born. “It’s just a great way to keep the Christmas spirit alive all year long,” states Rebecca Gee.

The ornaments were hung from the ceiling with care with the hopes that the guests would soon arrive there. Even the door was decorated with parsley mistletoe. Homemade ginger snaps, peppermint bark, and jell-o ribbon salad replaced the visions of sugarplums that danced in their heads. And what Christmas party is complete without a white elephant gift exchange and Christmas caroling?

“We wanted a quaint gathering to get to know new people.” LJ says. Well, I’m not sure if we officially broke the record, but it sure was a whole lotta fun.

After sweating under the sun in an officially free event (which came in four delightful colors), and some lessons in mob mentality, it started.

So many balloons in the air at once had a certain whimsical quality. Which you completely forget once you start getting wet. Really wet. I was real close to the front, and I was completely soaked—through both shirts, through my shorts and I could have gone swimming in my shoes. It was fantastic. After throwing all of my balloons, I started grabbing unbroken ones and throwing them back.

Other than getting hit in the ear, twice, it was free fun, a free lunch and one of the highlights of my summer. If you, like me, didn’t take your camera because you didn’t want it to get wet, Jwala Adhikari got some sweet photos. They’re up on Facebook.

Patriot: by Launa Marie Lewis

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 275px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_uoyU3Br23OY/TDA6oe9CJGI/AAAAAAAAAk0/FleVP4ukrVs/s400/founding_fathers_5482201.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5489952412942869602" />I am a patriot.

--Not in the traditional sense. I don't live in one of the thirteen colonies controlled by Great Britain. I don't pay egregious taxes on sugar or molasses or any of my varied paper supplies. And I don't go raiding tea ships in the Boston Harbor on my day off. I'm not a tactical genius like General George Washington. Nor do I posses the powers of persuasion characteristic of Thomas Jefferson. By comparison, I'm relatively insignificant.

But I qualify.

I eat apple pie; I watch baseball; I measure distance in inches and feet and--if its REALLY far--miles. When I'm feeling super patriotic I raise the colors high and dabble at singing the Star-Spangled Banner. But all of this has little to do with Patriotism.

In its most plain and simple form, patriotism is the love of one's own country and the support of its interests. As a young child I didn't understand much about the subject. All I knew was that each morning when I got to class we would recite the Pledge of Allegiance, hand over heart, and that a few times throughout the year we would be permitted to NOT be at school for various federal holidays (that's enough to make any child amiable toward their country). Growing up I came to view America as a land "choice above all others". America was this place where anything was possible. Anyone could come here and live a better life. With people coming to America from all over the world, how could it not be?

But America isn't as pristine as it once was. The ideals upon which this country was found have been set at naught. The standards that once stood unquestioned are now in sharp decline. At this time when everything seems so far off, there are a few who will still stand for those things that are right.

And that's why I'm a patriot. Against all odds, I am fighting to bring America back to its grass roots, back to what our Heavenly Father meant it to be. And with all the darkness and confusion, it seems like an insurmountable battle, but then again, so did The Thirteen Colonies vs Great Britain.

Fugitive Pieces: a Review by Emily Young

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 130px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_uoyU3Br23OY/TDA49zjBjkI/AAAAAAAAAkk/TFkwF4rxyWU/s200/fugitive+pieces.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5489950580224921154" />Anne Michaels’s first novel, Fugitive Pieces is not your expected Holocaust narrative. Instead of showing us “life” is the camps, like Elie Wiesel’s Night or hiding in attics like The Diary of Anne Frank, Michael fragments the death, the life, the life after the deaths, into chunks, sections, into pieces that she lays out before her reader, allowing her reader to piece things together.

Jakob Beer, the main character, is a seven-year-old Polish Jew when his family is attacked and killed by Nazis. A Greek anthropologist smuggles him to Greece and raises Jakob as his own. As we follow his life, and later, the life of others affected by the Holocaust, we come to realize the gravity of loss, and the change wrought on a soul as it heals. We also see, and feel, what it is like to be changed forever by the inhumanity of hate and the humanness of love.

Intensely quotable, incredibly poet, Fugitive Pieces takes a delicate yet never unflinching look into human capability. It ends with hope, as the narrator realizes, that to heal: “I see that I must give what I most need.”

Violence rating: 2.5 of 5 (because Nazis + Jews = death)
Sexual content rating: 2.5 of 5 (I’d let my Mom read it, but not anyone under 15)
Language rating: 1.5 of 5 (Maybe 1 or 2 questionable words, but nothing major)

The Price of Freedom: by Christian Hong

As this great nation celebrates its 234th year of liberty, I have to reflect on the sacrifices made in order to preserve those freedoms and blessings we truly hold dear. The Savior also gave his life so that we may enjoy the freedoms of spiritual bondage, a selfless act given as a gift through His eternal atonement.

As recorded in the Book of Mormon, the Nephites also defended their liberties as they “were inspired by a better cause…but they were fighting for their homes and their liberties, their wives and their children and their all, yea for their rites of worship and their church.” (Alma 43:45). Millions have died preserving this great land, and millions more fight daily to protect and defend those rights.

Without great sacrifice we would never enjoy the great freedoms we have today and all eternity. Taralyn Smith’s experience eating “The Most Awesome Lemon Meringue Pie in the World” was like, “sneaking into a lemon drop factory and getting all the leftovers.”

When the votes were counted, the winner for flakiest crust was “The Awe-inspiring Apple Pie” created by Anna Johnson. Michelle Farnsworth’s “Famous Fudge Family Apple Pie” won in the category for the best tasting pie. Quoting Taralyn Smith, “I think coming together in the name of food is the best possible form of bonding.”

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_uoyU3Br23OY/TDA4fp6GMBI/AAAAAAAAAkc/X5GdCME0_f8/s400/katelyn+pie.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5489950062241263634" />

Compassion: by Emily Young

Last night I attended a poetry slam. Much of the poetry was concerned with heavy issues like being transgender, child soldiers in Africa, etc. One line, spoken early in the evening, stuck out: “Compassion doesn’t take a day off.”

It’s easy to feel compassion for widows, the poor, etc. We feel expected to feel for them, so we do. What about a child who becomes a killer? What about a homosexual who is vilified for feelings that he/she cannot help and cannot get help with? What about those people? Do we feel compassion for them?

I’m NOT advocating moral relativity or for the acceptance of sin. But what I am
advocating is the concept of ‘hate the sin, love the sinner’. Because if we cannot show compassion to these people, those who are so easily tossed aside and tossed out, who are disregarded and discarded, then what are we doing?

We are commanded to “…mourn with those that mourn; yea, and comfort those that
stand in need of comfort, and to stand as witnesses of God at all times and in all things, and in all places that ye may be in, even until death, that ye may be redeemed of God…” (Mosiah 18:9). Let us strive to feel compassion to those who are hardest to show compassion for. Let us show our brothers and sisters, for they are children of God too, that we care. Let us stand as witnesses of God’s love to those that need it most.

Retractions From the Editor:

Dear BYU 6th Ward,

Today in the paper copy of "ThE FIsH BOwL" I made an egregious mistake. Although she was born healthy, she was left deaf and blind by illness at an early age. She then spent the next seven years almost completely isolated from the world.

Eventually, Helen Keller was able to learn to communicate through a modified sign language. She became the first deafblind person to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts. Ever. She then spent most of her life as an activist for the downtrodden and the disadvantaged. Helen Keller was once trapped by disadvantages but she spent her life helping to free others.

Heavenly Father gives all of us trials. We all know this, we live it everyday. Sometimes the disadvantages he gives us, or allows us to have, seem crippling. Don’t let yourself be crippled by what seems to be a disadvantage. Helen Keller used her experience of being disenfranchised by her own senses to help others who were also disenfranchised. She turned her disadvantage into an advantage. God gives us trials in order to help us find the capacity to turn our disadvantages into advantages and help others do the same. When I heard my friends at Disney/Pixar were planning a third Toy Story movie, I will admit I was slightly skeptical. As the world’s biggest Disney fanatic, and a fan of Buzz, Woody and the gang since the beginning, I worried that fresh ideas would be few, and my beloved characters would be dashed by run of the mill mediocrity. I am proud to say however that this is not the case.

The movie opens with an adrenaline packed train robbery re-enacting nostalgic memorable moments from the first film. We follow Andy as he ages, and prepares to leave for college. As the toys prepare for the worst, a series of mishaps land them in a daycare where the toys confront, hyperactive three year olds, an embittered villainous bear, (who smells like strawberries), and the truthful realization that Andy still loves them.

Without giving away too much, I can tell you that there is an escape attempt nothing less than exceptional, comedic moments second to none, and an ending that didn’t leave a single dry eye in the theatre. Hands down this is one of the best trilogies and it exceptionally soars to “Infinity and Beyond.”

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 182px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_uoyU3Br23OY/TB7AqXgvRWI/AAAAAAAAAi8/v_dE8C7Uqhw/s320/toy-story-3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5485033230282212706" />

Mormon Miracle Pageant: by Emily Hadlock

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_uoyU3Br23OY/TB69F2eJUbI/AAAAAAAAAik/yowqQaQI2VY/s200/Manti_one_mile.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5485029304402792882" />Manti, UT- “In memory of our God, [and] our religion.” Moroni’s declaration came to life at the 44th Mormon Miracle Pageant. 900 cast members, 600 of which were under the age of 18, told the intertwining stories of Joseph Smith and the Restoration, the coming forth and message of the Book of Mormon, and the pioneer trek west to Utah. The theme was “We demonstrate our love for Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, and our fellow men by serving in the Mormon Miracle Pageant.” Costumed Joseph Smiths, Nephites, and Lamanites mingled with the audience before the show. There could not have been a better stage with the breathtaking Manti Temple as the backdrop and a clear starry night sky overhead. As the lights shifted to set the stage, the announcer invited the audience to consider their place within the story and the events that have molded their lives. Ponder those same questions. Also, the pageant shows from June 22-26, if you are interested in seeing this spectacular pageant.

Paul Petty's Pool Party: By Emily Young

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_uoyU3Br23OY/TB62K3yvS-I/AAAAAAAAAiU/CbJdmpUaeXI/s320/finding_nemo800x600.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5485021694075554786" />Campus Plaza Pool-The scantily (yet modestly) clad. Snack food. Feel-good movie. Really, what more does a party need? Nothing, and last night’s pool party had all of these things and more.

Ostensibly to celebrate the return of a certain Adam Humes (whose manly lumberjack beard is either impressive, frightening or both), Paul Petty’s party was water themed, with pool-side Goldfish snacks, and the Pixar new classic Finding Nemo. Because this is a well-known, well-loved movie, most people knew most of the words, and as Jordan Moody pointed out, listening to Marie Lewis quote and re-quote the movie was almost as entertaining as the movie. BTW Marie does a fab Dory impression.

Other than Pixar-induced warm fuzzies and liquid frolicking, my favorite part was when the wind blew the screen into the pool. No harm done, but isn’t it fun to watch people scramble in mild panic? But maybe that’s just me…

Anyways. It was a rip-roaring good time, with late-comers (Sarah June, Marcelo, and Jeff), some crashers (that red-headed girl from the third floor whose name I don’t know even though I see her everyday) and lots of friends. With hands we have he ability to move and act. And with hands, great cities have been built, mountains have been moved, friendships have formed, truces have been called and worlds without number have been created. In this most recent General Conference, President Uchtdorf gave a talk entitled “You Are My Hands.” It made me reflect on how much our hands can show the love our Savior showed before, during and even after His mortal ministry. President Uchtdorf mentioned that “as we emulate His perfect example, our hands can become His hands, our eyes His eyes, our heart His heart.” The more we can embrace, comfort and learn to serve other as the Savior does, the more we can become even as He is, and can look forward to His outstretched arms waiting to embrace us when our tenure on earth is through.

Smoothie Tuesdays: by Edwin Miller

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_uoyU3Br23OY/TBVmXAiAJ5I/AAAAAAAAAh0/bvZljc_MgtI/s400/smoothie-main_full.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5482400666859087762" />S204-In what started off as a healthy prefix to Glee episodes, now has naturally evolved into a social event bringing friends together for tasty fruit concoctions. Anna Johnson, residing in S204, just enjoyed watching Glee with her sister, and they would blend up some smoothies to enjoy during their time together. But then friends like Sarah June Carroll decided to enter the fray and bring some more fruit-based fun. As more and more people became interested, things got a little expensive for Anna. “I was spending over 10 dollars just for these smoothies ever week.” Soon this changed though when the idea came out to have friends bring fruit of their own. Now we have blends that no one can agree on the exact taste. “I think there’s mostly grapes and raspberries” said Jenny Bentley. I personally tasted strawberries and citrus. No matter what the taste though, everyone enjoys being there. “I thoroughly enjoyed the smoothie,” said Doug Clark, our ward’s famous soccer player. This explosion of frutastic flavors maybe on its next evolution, thanks to Brian Thrap, Last Smoothie Tuesday he made milk shakes. So everyone come this Tuesday between 8-9 pm and see what you can add to this smooth social event.

Let Them Eat Cake: by Emily Young

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 212px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_uoyU3Br23OY/TBVl30H00wI/AAAAAAAAAhs/Bcs13mwcHHs/s320/the+chocolate_017.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5482400130952123138" /> The Chocolate, Orem-Perhaps not situated in the most picturesque or trendiest part of town, Orem’s The Chocolate is a dessert shop worth visiting. Located at 212 S State Street in a refurnished home, the ambiance is one of estrogen-laced bonding and handholding heart-to-hearts. Downstairs, there are couches and tables perfect for roommate dates, while upstairs there are two-person nooks with tables just wide enough to sneak a little footsie. The desserts are hit-and-miss--sometimes its to-die-for-good, other times, disappointingly pretentious. Nicole Taylor had a slice of “The Velvet,” a rendition of the Waldorf-Astoria’s classic red velvet cake and I had what they called “The Husband,” a yellow cake with milk chocolate ganache icing. The cakes were okay, better when mushed with a fork, actually. However, if you’re looking for reasonably priced ambience and sugar, or hoping to appear sensitive to that redheaded cutie, The Chocolate, for all its gustatory downfalls, is the place to go.

Marcelo Gomez: by Emily Hadlock

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_uoyU3Br23OY/TBVj5U3eoLI/AAAAAAAAAhM/-S9MzBwOO4U/s320/28575_430350176638_630841638_5451827_6545865_n.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5482397957898543282" />N203-“I am happiest with family and friends, and when I’m outside on a warm day.” For two years though, Marcelo was serving a mission in the rainy Seattle area. Marcos, Marcelo’s fraternal twin brother, would describe Marcelo as “genuine, honest, trustworthy, and someone you can count on to always follow through.” Seth Brodrick, Marcelo’s roommate says, “He’s mortal, that’s what I like about him.” Welcome to the ward Marcelo!

Desireé González: by Marie Lewis

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 169px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_uoyU3Br23OY/TAxLoV4wmuI/AAAAAAAAAeM/EIwLrzL9x8Y/s200/10228_195119091137_656866137_4442903_1252688_n.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479838003045112546" />S201-Desiree Gonzalaz isn’t like other people. Now I’m not talking about the fact that she had an epic birthday party last week. Or the fact that she rocks it out on her piano and gets the whole ward to come watch. Those are probably just byproducts.

As a young child Desiree’s mother knew there was something different about her. She was very mature. She admits, classical music isn’t something that most Mexicans go for. But she loved it. As a young child, she had a Russian piano teacher who would often make her feel stupid for not knowing much about piano history. One day Gonzalez told herself, “nobody else will make me feel like I’m ignorant.”

That was one of the turning points in Desiree’s life. From that day on, she spent hours in the library finding out everything she could about piano music. And it shows. She said, “In the piano program I’m always on top. I always know everything: every song, every composer, everything.” And though some of her peers in the piano program might find it somewhat annoying, Desiree’s Russian teacher thinks its great. Gonzalez said, “She tells me I’m her pride.”

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_uoyU3Br23OY/TAxLWBV6fuI/AAAAAAAAAeE/32gwX9xrdmw/s400/26893_424396581137_656866137_5862884_7774421_n.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479837688292605666" />But it wouldn’t be fair to say that’s all there is to her. Gonzalez has this whole other side. She said, “I think that I have—not that I’m bipolar—but I think I have two personalities.” She enjoys speaking in English. Gonzales said, “People tell me that they like my accent, but I don’t like it.” She hates shoes in the doorway and pity invites but can’t help but smile when thinking about her Disney Princess coloring book. And if she had three days left to live, Gonzalez says, “I would thank all the people that have helped me in my life. I would go kiss the guy I like and then I would go back to Mexico, and . . . play my favorite song one last time.”

Behind the Imagination: by Paul Petty

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 134px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_uoyU3Br23OY/TAxKocJ5qII/AAAAAAAAAd0/OHtdlLD1wc0/s200/looking-glass.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479836905215993986" />
A Book Review of The Looking Glass Wars

Frank Beddor has redefined the world of imagination introduced to us by Lewis Caroll. The Looking Glass Wars is a trilogy of political intrigue, romance, heroism, and dynamic imagination. This is the story of Alyss of Wonderland—how it really happened.

Princess Alyss Heart faces the threat of her life when her Aunt Redd tries to take over the Queendom of Wonderland. Will she and her royal bodyguard, Hatter Madigan, defeat Redd and her feline assassin?

Once you start the first book you won’t be able to put it down until you’ve read the whole trilogy. The titles of these three individual masterpieces are as follows, beginning with the first: The Looking Glass Wars, Seeing Redd, and Arch Enemy. Beddor has created an electrifying tale that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the final conclusion.

Closer to Home: by Edwin Miller

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 226px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_uoyU3Br23OY/TAxM89WPGXI/AAAAAAAAAes/MuoMTkGY_2g/s320/ProvoTempleFountain.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479839456746740082" />Provo--Going to the temple embraces the physical fulfillment of eternal goals. We look to the temple as a source of strength, guidance, and power. We walk through those sacred doors, calming our hearts and our minds, not because of the grandeur of the temple, but in the knowledge that this is the Lord’s house. This is home. There we have the chance to act in Christ’s name, to feel the warmth of pure heavenly love.

My heart has asked why some days I feel so close, and others so distant. The answer lies with purifying my desires. It was then that I felt him walking besides me and lifting my heart and mind upwards to enjoy divine revelation. May we all strive to attend the temple, and there reach with our souls to the source of love we all require to fully live this blessing we call life.

Wear the Rainbow: by Emily Hadlock

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_uoyU3Br23OY/TAxSsk3HI-I/AAAAAAAAAfU/_rURSI6Va4E/s320/P6050035.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479845772365603810" />
Kiwanis Park—Jell-o is "natural sun block" (Matthew Wyman-18), "sticky, yet satisfying" (Aaron Drollette-23), and "fun to eat, but even more fun to throw" (Becca Flake-19). It seems as though the Skittles marketing campaign has some competition. With Jell-o, not only can you taste the rainbow, you can wear the rainbow.

What started out as a friendly journey to Kiwanis Park, was followed by a ruthless battle between two teams: red/orange Jell-o and green/yellow Jell-o. Representing the red/orange team, Anna Johnson, 20, stated, “We’re going to dominate and there’s nothing green/yellow can do about it.” Competition was intense, but Marcelo, 25, gave an opening safety prayer before the fight.

With bated breath, the two teams watched the first chunk of translucent sugar pierce the air and the battle began. A jumble of red, orange, yellow, and green confetti colored the soldiers. Even the Bishop was not exempt as several people joined forces to bring him down. Jell-o has a way of separating people, but the great thing about Jell-o is that it also brings people closer. Observers at the park may have been skeptical originally, but ended up asking to join. Tianne Stanley, 19, said, “Your ward is awesome, fun, and creative. This was a blast!”

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_uoyU3Br23OY/TAxTqsG218I/AAAAAAAAAfk/twxpoAukVtY/s400/P6050041.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479846839462582210" />

Jenny Johnson said, “The Jell-o fight was absolutely worth it.
